FOLKLORE & MAGICK: Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? Roses have been part of magick and folklore for centuries. They’re beautiful yet dangerous because of their thorns but smell heavenly. They’re the ultimate symbol of love and passion. In the Iliad, rose oil was said to have been used to anoint the body of Hector before burial. The rose is closely associated with Aphrodite (Greek) and Venus (Roman) as a symbol of love, passion, and purity. The sea foam that Aphrodite sprang from was said to have turned into white roses. Lakshmi, a Hindu goddess, was said to have been created from 108 large and 1,008 small rose petals

THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES: Known to help with depression and can uplift the mood. Rose has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties that can be used internally and on the skin. Rose water has been used in skin care for centuries. It can help during the menstrual cycle for pain and mood as well as symptoms during perimenopause.

MAGICKAL USES: Roses are great for most spiritual witchcraft practices such as working with psychic abilities. They’re essential in love magick to draw love in, create passion, self love, potions, and spells. The thorns are excellent to use for banishing or hexing. Roses are also symbolic of new beginnings. Use them at the new moon for spells, new projects, or ideas.

THERAPEUTIC USES: Rose petals make a wonderful tea on their own or can be added to other blends to soothe, comfort, and help with the mood.

IDEAS FOR USING: Roses added to bathwater can be used as a ritual or to soothe a broken heart. Due to their spiritual connection, they work well in almost any spell or potion. I love to make tea blends with rose petals. But my favorite way to use rose petals is to make a rose glycerite or rose water to use in skin care and glamour magick.
