FOLKLORE & MAGICK: Yarrow is named after the Greek hero Achilles. According to one myth, he was dipped in Yarrow tea to make him invulnerable. In battles, Yarrow was used to staunch bleeding and disinfect wounds. However, Yarrow has a history of being used for divination and clairvoyance. It’s known for divining one’s future lover or determining if someone is truly loved. Yarrow is very special in Scottish folk magick and can potentially draw in the Fae or repel them. It’s also be very protective at keeping evil out and protecting against hexes.

THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES: It has anti-inflammatory and hemostatic (means to stop bleeding) which is why it was traditionally used to clean and stop wounds from bleeding. It can help bring down fevers and with digestion. Yarrow is safe to use but should be reserved for when it’s needed and not taken regularly.

MAGICKAL USES: Placing Yarrow under a pillow can reveal the dreamer’s fate. Place at the corners of your home for protection and across doorways to keep evil out. Or burn to smoke out negative energies. Use in love spells to strengthen the love that’s already there. Use in spells to break a hex or curse. 

THERAPEUTIC USES: It can be used as a soak or a wound wash. The flowers can be ground into a fine power to stop small cuts and scrapes from bleeding. You can make tea to help break a fever and fight infection but add equal parts Peppermint because Yarrow doesn’t taste awesome. The tincture can be applied to bug bites and stings. 

IDEAS FOR USING: Yarrow is such a great herb to have in your witchy apothecary. Grind the flowers into a fine powder and use to stop bleeding for small cuts. Make a yarrow tea to soothe itchy skin. Drink Yarrow and Mugwort tea to enhance divination, the Claires, or soothe a weary soul. Add to love spells of all kinds. Make a sachet of Yarrow and protective crystals to carry with you to ward off negative energy.
